How do average compositions of soil look like?

Is every element that can be found in our sample of natural origin?

Or are some already pollutants?

And how high have to be values for certain elements to actually call them pollutants?

Motivation

Pollution is becoming more and more ubiquitous today. To get an overview of how easy pollutants can be spread and how they behave, samples where taken from a road side to be analysed for possible pollution.

Methods

The taken samples were dried, separated into two fractions and analysed with a XRF gun. Later on the fine and coarse fraction as well as the bulk sample could be compared with each other.

There are no significant differences within the element concentrations between the coarse and the fine fraction. Therefore it was possible to concentrate more on the fine fraction from which could be seen a decreasing trend of pollutants with increasing distance from the source.

Results

The choosen "source of pollution" does have a certain amount of compount input to the surrounding area but still not in a range of any concern. The only concentration that seems to be higher as the average is cadmium.
